Kevin Llewellyn, what do you think?

http://www.kevart.com/main-menu.html

There is the link above to one of my favorite artists, Kevin Llewellyn. A young realism painter in LA. I guess the reason I like him so much is due to many factors. Such as he is very dark. His life story, cause in most ways I can relate to it. How that he is anarchy, such as many people have painted "The Virgin Mary" but the way he painted it gave it a feel that makes me think, Christianity is more dark and evil than what its made out to be, or more what you are forced to believe in school (I apologize if anyone has any religious beliefs its just my view). But Its just how he conveys his life in his paintings and drawings whether its drink or drug related, and how he confesses that in his art by painting strippers or rock stars or tattooist, memory's, lovers friends and so on. I have him as a friend on Facebook and he often puts up little drawings he does in his sketch book and it always amazes me of what he can do in what situation he is in, like there has been a few drawings that have been done in a bar or whilst lying in a gutter, or after a night out. personally I find his dedication to his art incredible. My question basically is, What do you think of his work?

    1. I like his work, it shows a great deal of skill and observation. I dont usually like this kind of dark/gothic style of art but I like some of his work as it seems very powerful and dramatic. I like the paintings with the skulls because I think they have a very powerful presence. Some of his work is a little bit disturbing tho (e.g Dedication of the soul painting).

  2. wow. very nice indeed arran, there are so many of these i couldnt actualy beleive were realy paintings. the way he has done the hair is just amazing; the bright flashing colours against the black background *just yes. what else is that his work is so raw that it even makes me feel exposed when im looking at it especialy in his work with the naked women, the way he's captured their vulnerability is moving. top job boyo =]x

  3. I think im not too keen on his work... he has the skills theres no doubt about it but i feel your comment on "the virgin mary" and how religion is darker than it first appears seems a bit on the nose to me as i have grown up havin that opinion. Also I dont feel a pull towards his work, wanting to know how he has acheived any of the teqniques he uses or even to know the story behind it...
i find the paintings very dark in both colour and in theme and most of them have strong sexual notes.
i can see why you like this arran but i feel there far to heavy for my taste but i do like some of his pencil drawings as they more free.

  4. Arran, you are right about dedication - whether I like the work or not - for me it is a little too illustrational - he did not arrive at this level by merely thinking about making work. So ...

  6. Arran I can see why you like this work but I have to say it leaves me cold. The majority of the paintings are incredibly dark and sinister and make me feel ill at ease to say the least. On the other hand,if the artist's intention is to provoke such emotions he's done a good job.I would certainly like to have his ability - just not his subject matter.

Do you have any favourite artists who work on a lighter theme?

  8. This is certainly much lighter Arran. I really like his use of colour and technique in his "tree paintings" and his versatile approach to celebrity portraits. Thanks for posting this.
