Iv got a book called "untitled art" and it's basically a collective record of anonymous street painting, some of the stuff is quite powerful and it got me thinking about why the artists wouldn't want to claim them.
So I ask... Does an artists work lose some of it's artistic value if it has been created for money or personal gain?
Really good question - hmmm... some would argue that you make art because you have to, otherwise you would feel incomplete and money or notoriety is not your raison d'ĂȘtre - you know, the idea of the artist starving in his garret eating paint and manically working away, it's a romantic notion but is there anything wrong with that? On the other hand, paint does not taste very nice.
ReplyDeleteI think that maybe as long as the artist is allowed to express themselves, convey the message that they are wanting to and create art, then that is the main thing if you can make money from it as well then even better. I think that the art is to be enjoyed, the value comes from the feelings it stirs.
