Cosplay: Art or Not?
Cosplay; A popular Japanese pastime when someone dresses up in a costume of their favourite anime, manga or video game character. Nowadays, Cosplay can be seen at anime conventions.
As an amateur Cosplayer, I've been thinking about Cosplay being some form of Art (while at the same time, thinking on who I'm gonna cosplay as at Dee-Con this year)
In my opinion, I believe cosplay can be considered a form of art, because some fans don't have the money to buy the costume, they work hard on making their own costume, either of their favourite character or a character of their own creation so it falls into the category of textiles and fashion. But photography also plays a vital part in cosplay. I read Neo magazine and they have an annual competition called Cosplay Idol; photographers go to anime conventions to take pictures of cosplayers during the after party, it usually happens at major cons like London MCM Expo and Kita Con. From the photos I've seen, it's very impressive.
So what is your opinions on Cosplay, do you think it's art or not

Hi Yuuki
ReplyDeleteWell cosplay is a new one on me. In my opinion if there is an element of creativity and the costumes are original designs created by the wearer then it can be considered as art Also if it's part of a performance then it can be considered as performance art.Anything else is just dressing up!
Any other views?
Hey Yukki - do you design and make your own costume? I mean it sounds to me like it is about some kind of fantasy role playing and its purpose is ...? Get the idea about design etc.. but having difficulty in grasping this one as performance art. Can you explain further.

Designing my own costume has crossed my mind before but there is the price of fabric to worry about
DeleteHey Yuuki, really think if you are not designing or making your own costume then its someone elses' art and not yours. Why can you not upcycle? Still want to know, is it so you can do a performance piece? Do not want to appear negative but you do need to explain further, please.
