Cosplay: Art or Not?

Cosplay; A popular Japanese pastime when someone dresses up in a costume of their favourite anime, manga or video game character. Nowadays, Cosplay can be seen at anime conventions.
As an amateur Cosplayer, I've been thinking about Cosplay being some form of Art (while at the same time, thinking on who I'm gonna cosplay as at Dee-Con this year)
In my opinion,  I believe cosplay can be considered a form of art, because some fans don't have the money to buy the costume, they work hard on making their own costume, either of their favourite character or a character of their own creation so it falls into the category of textiles and fashion. But photography also plays a vital part in cosplay. I read Neo magazine and they have an annual competition called Cosplay Idol; photographers go to anime conventions to take pictures of cosplayers during the after party, it usually happens at major cons like London MCM Expo and Kita Con.  From the photos I've seen, it's very impressive.

So what is your opinions on Cosplay, do you think it's art or not

Favourite Artists cont....

It's always hard to choose a favourite so I thought I would introduce this young artist I came across while researching for our fine art project - Behind the Scenes

Clementine McGaw is a young British artist who graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Central St Martins. She won the award for Best Emerging Fine Artist 2010 awarded by Saatchi & Saatchi. Her paintings concentrate on human suffering particularly that caused by conflict. Some of the images are very harrowing and evoke raw emotion.
The artist uses oil and gloss paint in such a way that it drips down the canvas obscuring some of the images as though to suggest they shouldn't be seen. However these images are large and I think speak load and clear about human suffering caused by the politics of war and the power of the Sovereign State.

Who's your 'favorite' artist and why?

Right guys, in aide of keeping this thing rolling I thought I'd start up a "favorite" artist discussion. Seeing as there is a pretty eclectic group of individuals on here hopefully we get some interesting responses.
Pretty much who is your favorite artist and why? When I say artist I mean everything; Painting, Printing, Film, Graphics, Fashion etc.
Please provide images when posting too so we know what your going on about.

I'll go first;

I'd probably say my favorite artist is the Austrian Painter Egon Schiele, I love the way he portrays the human figure as an infected broken character. Although these people in the paintings seem frail and weak I still seem to find something quite beautiful in the way he has painted them. I think I also find his work appealing because he dared to show things how they were, for example his depictions of prostitutes etc; showing them as the desperate/ down-trodden people they were as opposed to the Futurists who made their subject matter better than it was (roughly in the same time period). I think that art should be honest and not manufactured by trying to make something out as something it isn't, I guess that's why I really find his work so appealing... as it shows raw imagery that hasn't been adorned in anyway. Looking at Schiele's work and the themes it explores it led me to so many more artists who do the same and have been a massive influence on my work.

What about you guyssss, who's your favorite?

The price of money

Iv got a book called "untitled art" and it's basically a collective record of anonymous street painting, some of the stuff is quite powerful and it got me thinking about why the artists wouldn't want to claim them. So I ask... Does an artists work lose some of it's artistic value if it has been created for money or personal gain?

Portrait of sir Ian Mckellen

Heres a portrait of sir Ian Mckellen who I think is a great actor. I decided to draw him after seeing the photo and thinking "hmm ive never drew an old guy before" so I drew him. I drew the hair by laying down a middle tone where the hair would be, then I used an eraser to draw strands of white hair. Some of the pencil lines havent shown up because im not sure how to work my scanner correctly, but theirs not a lot of difference.
What do you think?

Kevin Llewellyn, what do you think?

http://www.kevart.com/main-menu.html

There is the link above to one of my favorite artists, Kevin Llewellyn. A young realism painter in LA. I guess the reason I like him so much is due to many factors. Such as he is very dark. His life story, cause in most ways I can relate to it. How that he is anarchy, such as many people have painted "The Virgin Mary" but the way he painted it gave it a feel that makes me think, Christianity is more dark and evil than what its made out to be, or more what you are forced to believe in school (I apologize if anyone has any religious beliefs its just my view). But Its just how he conveys his life in his paintings and drawings whether its drink or drug related, and how he confesses that in his art by painting strippers or rock stars or tattooist, memory's, lovers friends and so on. I have him as a friend on Facebook and he often puts up little drawings he does in his sketch book and it always amazes me of what he can do in what situation he is in, like there has been a few drawings that have been done in a bar or whilst lying in a gutter, or after a night out. personally I find his dedication to his art incredible. My question basically is, What do you think of his work?
