Well its been just over a week since the Damien Hirst program was on and i'm curious as to what everyone thought about it, personally i thought it was quite interesting. To be honest i'm not that keen on his work, not my 'cuppa tea'! having watched the program tho i think i can understand some of the work a bit more. The only works shown on the program that i did quite like was the pieces with the butterflies and the diamond skull because i do like a bit of bling! So what did the rest of you think?

I really didnt like his style of art because it seems to mostly signify death which really depresses me. I did like the dove one that he did because of the graceful pose of the dove.
ReplyDeletei know what you mean Greg, a bit morbid weren't they? I really didn't like the 2 cubes with the flies and cow's head, i could see it was kinda showing the life cycle of a fly, but for me it wasn't art.
ReplyDeleteI have established with myself that what (contemporary) art is today is not down much to the skills one's have or the figurative image one's paints, but it evolves around the concept of it. Perhaps one's who isn't able to paint, such as Jeremy Derrell or Damien Hirst, can still be a successful artists if there is a good/new concept behind which involves the public opinion, especially critics.
DeleteMind you guys, I did not think like that some time ago, but it makes sense: we need to be original and bring on novelty!
I really liked some of his work. They were really interesting to look at, and i feel if you were there - at the gallery - that you would get a different perspective on them. Why not put a cow or a shark in a tub with formaldehyde and call it art!! He creates something unforgeable and creating an experience for the viewer, either that be sad, angry, scared, bewildered or amazed. I think he's someone to admire because he's done things that are challenging the audience's mind and done things that no one else has done and has become successful from it.
